The Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) is a non-profit/non-governmental organization that helps children who suffered abuse heal from their trauma in a nurturing and encouraging environment. Abused children are often caught up in a downward spiral of low self-esteem, stress, trust issues, and internalized trauma. The more a child feels alienated, disconnected, and misunderstood, the more they withdraw. Their learning skills and ability to concentrate suffers at school and this unleashes another wave of low self-esteem, stress, and other issues. Around 68% of the children referred to ACF trail their peers in academic development by at least two years.
During 2015-16, there were 225,487 Australian children suspected of being harmed or at risk of harm from abuse and/or neglect.
The Foundation works closely with school personnel throughout Australia to help these education professionals better understand how the fear, trauma, and violence many kids are going through impacts their sense of security and physical safety.
ACF also coordinates with educational professionals to craft strategies that foster a sense of connection and calm among abuse survivors in a school setting. Through active, gentle but firm intervention, educators can help kids better cope with the aftermath of abuse. Far from feeling that they bear their problems alone, abused kids are able to adapt and overcome the effects of abuse trauma because they feel safe and encouraged in an accepting environment.
The ACF has put together a tried and proven system that helps children break free from the lingering effects of trauma and neglect. Through specific programs that help child abuse survivors improve their learning, coping, and familiarization skills. By providing kids with the right environment, their natural curiosity and interest in learning are stoked and they make up for lost ground. Thanks to the Foundation’s intervention and encouragement, the ACF is able to help 77% of all the children they work with to catch up to their same-age peer group.
About 56% of children currently in the foster care system experience some destabilizing event due to behavioral issues they exhibit within the prior 12 months. Accordingly, the ACF also works with foster care providers to help them become more sensitive to the developmental consequences of abuse. Foster care providers work closely with ACF to foster a more encouraging and positive environment that enables kids to feel safe and secure enough to catch up developmentally.
